Concept and realization by Daniel Neumann and Gill Arno
Local participants: Andrew Lafkas, Barry Weisblat, Ben Owen, Dave Ruder, David Galbraith, Jason Brogan, Jennifer Grossman, Madeleine Shapiro, Richard Kamerman, Theres Wegmann (graphic design), Tyler Wilcox, Wolfgang Gil (programming).

International participants: Alan Courtis (Argentina), Bernd Schurer (Switzerland), Ernst Karel (U.S.), Estherb (Canada), Gil Sanson (Venezuela), Gilles Aubry (Switzerland/Germany), Jason Kahn (U.S./Switzerland), Joda Clément (Canada), John Grzinich (U.S./Estonia), Jordan Paul (U.S.), Martin Janicek (Czech Republic), Pali Mersault (France), Patrick Franke (Germany), Patrick McGinley (U.S./Estonia), Sebastien Roux (France), Simon Whetham (United Kingdom).

About the music

Gill Arno and Daniel Neumann organize in space and time the field recordings sent by multiple phonographers from many countries. A group of local sound artists and musicians, performing with acoustic as well as electronic instruments, create an acoustic topology of where we are in a world of non-place spaces, of presence and solitude.

The concept of non-place is based on anthropologist Marc Augé’s observation that airports, railway stations, leisure parks, hotel chains, and supermarkets, for examples, are places of transience that are not significant enough to us to be considered places in our lives. They are non-places because they do not relate to us, or contain a history that we share, or an identity that is ours, whereas we have a relationship and feel a history and identity with what we think of as places. In Augé’s words, “Non-places are the real measure of our time …” They suggest a perspective of, as he calls it, supermodernity, in which travelers feel part of a larger world yet feel solitude, as if they are always yet never at home.

Daniel Neumann explains the concept as represented in the music: “The musicians on-site in Judson Church are confronted with an acoustic environment of displaced recordings which address the notion of non-places. Gill and I have specified different modes of listening as the ‘score’ for the concert, which the musicians follow in their reactions to the environment and to each other. We chose musicians that have a vocabulary of textural, unusual sounds rather than traditional, expressive melodies, and in their listening and reacting, we ask them to remember that neither places nor non-places ever exist in pure form. One can have characteristics of both and can change into the other.”

DOUBLE QUADROPHONIC DIPTYCH IN 3 MOVEMENTS is a collaboration between Richard Garet and Daniel Neumann consisting of mapping out geometrical shapes with an 8-channel speaker system over Eyebeam’s vast Main Space. Each of them is using 4 speakers, symmetrically intertwined. The sound material that they created stems mostly from synthesized sources (analog and digital) and has then been exposed to various processes including filtering, layering, re-recording in different physical spaces or through modified media, speaker distortion, and others. These processed files provide each artist with a vocabulary with which they play out the speaker locations in relation to the architecture and to each other, extending the geometrical starting points into a complex spatial listening experience.

Within this collaboration, its participants were developing and experimenting with a hybrid between sound installation and live performance in Eyebeam’s Main Space. Some elements happened in real-time, others were programmed or generated algorithmically. The participants were engaging in a process of systemic composition, which used the space as an instrument, encouraging a “topological listening” practice. “Topological listening” means that there is no focus on sound elements themselves, rather, sounds call attention to the potential for meaning in their relationships to each other, to the space and to the individual listeners engaging with them. A collaborative approach to creating these environments highlights complex interconnections which can hardly be reduced to a single narrative.

Participants:
GILL ARNO (small sound sources as localized islets; and subjective documentation through recordings made by the audience)
WOLFGANG GIL (spectral response, custom spectrum analysis/synthesis software),
CORNELIA FREDERIKE MÜLLER (individual space, headphone sculptures),
DANIEL NEUMANN (feedback apparatus consisting of multiple microphones, filters and delays, as well as large speakers and speaker objects),
MICHAEL J. SCHUMACHER (live response, guitar/synthesizer processed through custom multi-channel sound system)

Zwei Teams in zwei Städten mit sechs Stunden Zeitverschiebung gestalten ein Live-Set: “trans-atlantic feedback” – New York hört Leipzig, Leipzig hört New York, Cielo Club hört ASPN, ASPN hört Cielo Club.

The gallery hours of ASPN in Leipzig, Germany, will be shifted to Eastern Standard Time.
There will be a parallel event between Cielo, a night club in New York City and ASPN gallery. Over the course of 6 hours an audio stream will be established between the two locations.

In NYC, the performers listed above will use microphones placed inside Cielo – a night club, which is usually closed at this hour – and produce a mix of room sounds and processed sounds, which is streamed to Leipzig. The narrative will be centered around an empty, unused night club.

The performers in Leipzig (listed above) will simultaneously be mixing and processing their microphones, which are installed inside ASPN. The mix from Leipzig gets sent back to NYC and will be played through Cielo’s sound system. Feedback occurs because the microphones in each location, will also partly pick up the sounds from the other location playing through the speakers.

All performers will play in rotation over the course of 6 hours and an audience can witness the trans-atlantic dialogue at both locations, during this time period.
