The group will explore collaborative strategies of composing and performing sound and visuals based on the idea of modular organization. Pieces are developed in non-hierarchical and decentralized forms where collaborators interact as equals. The modular structure is reflected less on the technical level but primarily on the level of collaborative formulation of ideas and its execution.

The architectonic and acoustic installation “Three sounds at 317 E 5th St” focuses on the perception and cognition of the specific space and its existing sounds. Three expansive cones visually amplify the three most present sounds at the Red House Gallery in the East Village, while also creating an acoustical focus. The installation adapts to the existing structure of the room, which creates a unique intervention in the environment. Daniel Neumann is presenting recordings of the three sounds, which he will use exclusively for his live performance “Three variations on three sounds at 317 E 5th St” during the opening.

In this installation of the piece _Made Space the participants are working together for the second time to perform a composition. The first installation was the result of the first time running 5-day intensive workshop in Modular Collaboration that took place at Diapason Gallery, NYC in July 2010 (with Nisi Jacobs).
Modular collaboration enacts non-hierarchical and decentralized forms of organization that put paid to the concept of the single composing genius. The collaborators interact as equals in the formulation of modules. In concerts and installations these modules are then brought together to produce unique and non-repeatable situations. Starting from thinking about the differences between places and spaces, the participants of this installation of _Made Space are working on text as a place, the narrow border between stable and unstable conditions, granules, speech synthesis, and on transient extraction as a form of de-/re-contextualizing.*

This page is taken out of the book “2010: Odysee Two” which I’m working on at the moment. After taking out page 87/88 the page was replaced with the wings of a brimstone butterfly I found dead on Europe’s longest train platform. Then chapter III. Discovery was glued together page by page.

The soundwalk “Demasking The Bridges” explores the small triangle between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo. The soundscape of the area is mainly dominated by the traffic of the two bridges. By slowly oscillating between the bridges, crossing through diverse surroundings the group learns about and experiences the “Masking Effect”. Focusing on the weaker maskees and shifting the threshold of the masker with our movement slowly uncovers more and more sound events and acoustic arenas.

The movements of flocks of birds provide the basic theme from which each protagonist develops his own musical and conceptual approach. The instrumentalists Schmidt (clarinet) and Weinheimer (flute) each composed and pre-recorded a one-channel part, which is played back from the stage. This playback is accompanied live by Ruder (clarinet). Neumann picks up the trio on stage with three microphones and diffuses these sounds into the 8-channel sound system surrounding the audience. Franke composed an 8-channel piece made from field recordings of actual bird movements. In his part he also considers the location of Elebash Hall in emulating the birds’ south – north migration.

AlulaTonSerien is a platform for sound art and electroacoustic music series. Participants explore new ways of composing, which generally can be described as modular collaborations. Through modular collaborations a non-hierarchical, decentralized form of organization is put into practice, replacing the single composer as the creative genius. Pieces in this series are developed in different formats and variations as ongoing processes of adopting basic materials and themes.
